The Blue Flag is a prestigious award given by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), a non-profit organization. The Blue Flag is awarded to coastal locations throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
In order to qualify for this award, it is necessary to respect specific parameters, which can be split into 4 main categories, containing the individual rules:
Environmental Education and Information
Holidaymakers must be kept informed about the rules and codes of conduct in order to respect the natural ecosystem. There must be at least 5 environmental education activities offered each year.
Water Quality
For the bathing water to meet the quality standards, it must comply with the rigid European parameters on the absence of coli and streptococcus bacteria.
It is also important for there to be no discharges near the beaches.
Environmental Management
It is necessary to take care of the beach and keep it clean. In order to meet this objective an adequate number of waste disposal bins must be provided for separate waste collection.
The public toilet facilities must be kept clean, as must all the other equipment and areas on the beach.
Safety and Services
It is appropriate to provide lifeguards, life saving equipment and special emergency plans to cope with pollution risks.
At least one supply of drinking water must also be available at the beach.
