Everyone on board was rescued. On Sunday 30 August, at around 6.20pm, a yacht around 20 metres long caught fire off the Jesolo coastline, about a hundred metres from the harbour mouth by the lighthouse: the column of black smoke was visible from the beach for hours, between Piazza Nember and the lighthouse area. During the evening the hull, by then destroyed, sank. No one is in serious condition.
What happened off Jesolo beach?
The alarm was raised in the late afternoon of Sunday 30 August, shortly after 6.20pm. The yacht, a Posillipo Technema around twenty metres long, was heading back to the Marina del Cavallino, where it is usually moored, when it caught fire about a hundred metres from the harbour mouth by the Jesolo and Cavallino-Treporti lighthouse. The flames quickly spread across the whole hull.
People on the beach noticed immediately: the column of black smoke was visible from much of the shore, and according to news reports for kilometres along the coast, particularly along the stretch between Piazza Nember and the lighthouse area. It was the last Sunday in August and the beach was full: within minutes the scene was being filmed on dozens of phones and began circulating on local social media.
The boat belongs to a manager from Treviso and had been bought recently. Many of the passengers were from Treviso as well. “It must have been a short circuit,” one of them told the Tribuna di Treviso. “We saw the smoke rising, we weren't cooking.”
How were the people on board rescued?
There were ten people on board, including a minor, as well as the vessel's skipper. The first to reach them was a boat that happened to be passing. Immediately afterwards the Guardia costiera pleasure craft from Jesolo and Cavallino-Treporti arrived, bringing all the occupants to safety and taking them ashore while firefighting operations were getting under way.
The Vigili del fuoco took part in the operation with the distaccamento Marittimo di Venezia (Venice maritime detachment) and divers from the Nucleo regionale who came in from Mestre, along with the Drago 149 helicopter of the Venice air unit, fitted with a bucket for water drops from above. The Volpe helicopter of the Guardia di finanza provided support, and a protezione civile boat was also at the scene. None of those rescued is in serious condition: the decisive factor was how quickly the rescue teams reached the yacht.
Did the yacht sink?
Yes. The Vigili del fuoco worked for a long time to put out the fire on board, but a couple of hours later the hull, consumed by the flames, lost buoyancy and went down: at 8.05pm the vessel had already sunk. When it sank, there was no longer anyone on board.
The exact position of the sinking and the depth of the seabed have not been made public. Assessing the environmental damage and the difficulty of recovering the wreck from the seabed falls to the Vigili del fuoco diving unit in Mestre, which will handle it over the coming days.
Are there consequences for the sea and for swimming?
The sinking created a problem of diesel pollution that the Vigili del fuoco and the Capitaneria (coast guard) worked to contain with absorbent booms: there may be hundreds of litres of fuel in the tank. That is why the incident is still being followed even after the fire was put out.
At present there are no official communications imposing restrictions on swimming. The incident took place at sea and no measures affecting the shore have been announced: the beaches and services along the coast continued as normal, as did the events scheduled for the last weekend of August.
